Bead magnets, pins and other uses

Postby MysticViolet on Sun Jan 31, 2010 9:11 pm

I was wondering if anyone had some recommendations regarding the attachment of magnets and pins to the back of bead sprites. I know there are crafting kits in places like Toys R Us but I don't really know the quality of the materials. I'd like to know what others here are using and perhaps a mini-tutorial for the assembly process (so pins aren't crooked when attached and such). I had a great idea for a refrigerator magnet piece and I want to avoid buying the wrong items.

I use square magnets that you can buy at hobby lobby in a pack of 8 for $2. They come with foam mounting tape already installed. Others like sheet magnets, but I've found that they don't hold as well if you actually use the magnets to hold things up.

Yeah, I use sheet magnets and they suck. They fall off all the time. I've reduced to using those with hot glue attached to them and that seems to work. If you are going to stick larger projects, I might recommend the big sheets you can cut yourself and make an entire back out of it. I've seen hot glue for the pin backs too..

This seems to be on topic. How are people attaching their pieces to walls? I don't want to frame what I'm doing, I'm going for the wall sticker idea, only in beads. I thought about clear posh pins, but The big head would annoy the crap out of me. I'm a home owner, so punctures in the wall are not a concern. Double sided tape seams like it wouldn't be very secure on a painted surface. I though about sharpening little pieces of wire...

I tried tiny nails... but when you have to take them off they fall apart (And you end up having to use a spatula) so when I hang 'em up in the new house I'm going to try push pins.
Hope this helps!

I'd like to know how people deal with placing on Pins, I've tried hot glue and it does the job but just looks aesthetically ugly. :displeased:

I nail all mine to the wall using wire nails. I've never had a problem with them falling apart when I take them down. Whem I remove the nails I use a pair of needlenose pliers to smoothly extract the nail. The only caution I would give is be sure to distribute the nails so the weight of the sprite isn't being held up by a single nail in larger pieces where the weight could cause the piece to break under the strain.

This is exactly what I do. Like Kokopelli was saying, it's best if you distribute the nails over teh full piece so the weight isn't uneven, and also if you can find darker colored beads to push the nails through, they'll be virtually invisible from a distance of more than 3 feet. I also try not to push the nails in too far so they're easier to get out with the pliers.

I've always used clear thumbtacks and never had something fall.
