Just use a bunch of books! That's what I do. Then you can place them on top as you work your way down the bead sprite with your iron. College books, dictionaries and the like are the insta-win of heavy press.

Flame Mammoth - 07/28/09

Postby VorpalDormouse on Tue Jul 28, 2009 6:56 pm

Image

Hoo boy. Finally ironed him. He's been sitting on pegboards on my desk glaring at me because I couldn't build up the courage to try and iron him.

Due to the limitations of my camera phone, the Mavericks will no longer be positioned in appropriate settings (as with Chill Penguin in the freezer). Sorry about that.

Flame Mammoth is officially my biggest bead sprite so far. I had to use two old Guinness World Record books (2002 and 2003, if it makes any difference to you) in addition to my D&D v3.5 Player's Handbook. The only bigger Maverick is going to be Storm Eagle (because I just had to do their pre-battle poses... shot myself in the foot on that one). I kept in mind what I learned ironing Armored Armadillo, and ironing went almost perfectly.

The one ironing mistake that did occur was a good thing; a few single beads from the right knee and right ear didn't iron into the sprite, so I had to iron them in individually after I took the sprite off of the pegboards. I learned a new skill on the fly and managed to keep absolutely calm for the duration.

Sprite source here.

Got really bored while I was home and had brought my beads along. I was cruising through some sprite sheets and saw Metroid. I immediately thought, "Oh my God glow-in-the-dark green would be perfect."

So it is. Perler Black, Glow-in-the-Dark Green, and Red.

I wish I could get a glow-in-the-dark picture for you, but I can't seem to find a camera that will...

I'm shipping out Ninetales to my friend tomorrow. I should have a picture of it in just a few days (finally, amirite?).

Every beader needs a huge project to aspire to, yes? I think I've found mine.

Image

The ending scene from Golden Sun: The Lost Age (only missing Isaac in his parents since they're in a different scene).

360 x 120 pixels
13 x 5 pegboards
6' 1-1/8" x 2' 4-1/8"
43200 beads
$86.40 worth of beads (at ~0.2 cents a bead, excluding shipping costs)

Not sure whether I'd want to sell it or keep it. I think it'd go for a pretty penny, but Jesus it's epic.

Some day. Maybe.

08/04/09 - Sting Chameleon

Postby VorpalDormouse on Tue Aug 04, 2009 5:12 am

Image

Sting Chameleon marks the halfway point in my Mega Man X Maverick project. He's just a bit smaller on the whole than Armored Armadillo and certainly much thinner... but beading him felt like it took ages. I think it may be because he has so many little sections, unlike the gigantic mass that was Flame Mammoth.

Sprite sheet here.

I also took this opportunity to add a list of future sprites at the end of the gallery in my first post. Nothing really new to see there... except a familiar Cajun of whom I'm awfully fond.

I heard Cajun & I went running to the first page. Haha! You think you're fond??! Cleary you've missed my rants & raves.

If Gambit, L, or Gaara existed irl... oh my! No man (save for those three) would ever stand a chance with me again.

... & cue back to reality.

:grinbig: Oh no, I'm aware of your love for him. That was carefully worded to bait you specifically to see it.

Now make him come to life & I'll love you forever... or at least be eternally thankfull!

08/04/09 - Boomer Kuwanger

Postby VorpalDormouse on Tue Aug 04, 2009 10:27 pm

Image

Here's Maverick number five, Boomer Kuwanger. For being one of the hardest bosses in the game, he's kind of small... and seems to have a predilection for disco. It still felt like he took forever to bead, though.

Apologies for the shoddy quality. Guess he's just not photogenic.

Sprite sheet here.

??/??/09 - Ninetales

Postby VorpalDormouse on Wed Aug 05, 2009 4:24 pm

Drumroll, please!

Image

About goddamn time, right?

I've had Ninetales done since last semester but didn't want to have a picture online so I could surprise my friend. It took me a while to get foamcore and xstatic's I-swear-by-it Quick Grip glue (plus I'm a lazy bastard), so she just today received it in the mail.

Ninetales is probably my second biggest sprite... some of the Mavericks are a bit longer, but none of them are nearly as dense with pixels. Only Flame Mammoth might surpass it, but it's hard to say. I will say that I ALMOST ran out of Creme beads trying to make this one. Luckily there ended up being like 3 left over. I think Creme was made for Ninetales.

Lovely picture taken by air-smash.

The glue works pretty damn well... much better than the cheap super glue I've been using. So thanks for that! :grinbig:

 Well, you'll have to wait until I have a big enough variety of colors to try it... and probably a little less mental stability.
